October update
We can’t quite believe that the end of the 2020 school year is fast approaching. In Guatemala, the school year runs from January to October, which means we have just 1 more month to ensure our students have covered the full curriculum and completed all the required work to submit to The Ministry of Education.
At the beginning of October we sent out the final homework packs to 476 students who are currently preparing to complete their end of year exams at home. Teachers will continue to provide reinforcement work over the summer break for students who need extra support as well as tasks for all students to prepare them for the 2021 school year!
In addition to the homework packs, our team distributed huge bags of food supplies to families to get them through the month of October. Since March, EFTC has distributed an incredible 3,017 emergency food hampers! This has given our families some stability at a time when everything feels uncertain, ensuring our students receive the nutrients they need to continue their studies and helping parents to have a little more time and energy to support their children’s learning at home.
Covid-safe meeting spaces
Our operations team have been hard at work assembling gazebos in the School of Hope playground to create safe outdoor spaces, where employees can meet with students or parents who need support. These new Covid-safe spaces have provided teachers with a place to mark student assignments in the open air, enabling them to work together and see their students face to face for the first time in months, which is having great benefits for everyone’s mental health and well-being.
These Covid-safe meeting stations have recently been used to offer meetings to older students currently studying at university on the Further Education Programme. Our career guidance counsellors have been running mock interviews to help them to prepare for job interviews in their chosen field. We wish them the best of luck!
