Our nutrition program is integral to our overall success as a school. 50% of children in Guatemala suffer malnutrition which has a catastrophic impact on their health, stunting growth and impeding development. It is widely known that undernourishment and iron deficiency have long lasting effects into adulthood (World Food Program).
When our school kitchen had to close, we switched our focus to the distribution of food hampers and our monthly distribution continues to provide vital food to hundreds of families. We've delivered over 5,000 hampers since the pandemic began and for many months these days were the only time we had in-person contact with our families.
We provide all students at the School of Hope with nutritious school meals and snacks throughout the day. For many children, the school meals will be the only food they eat all day. We also run workshops with parents on the importance of nutrition at home including where to source affordable, healthy produce.
